Special Education and 504 Services
How will my child’s (Individualized Education Plan) IEP be met?
In an effort to provide Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) and allow students to appropriately access curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Special Education Department will make reasonable, appropriate and good faith efforts to provide special education and related services support for students. Case managers will develop continuous learning opportunities through distance and/or e-learning instruction to support student IEP goals and objectives. Instruction, assistance, and communication will be provided throughout the regular school day using telephone, video conferencing, email, or any other platform necessary to meet student’s needs. All meetings will be held virtually through conference calls or video conferencing to practice social distancing.
Communication is key during this time, therefore, the case manager will be in continuous contact with the IEP team members to ensure services and instruction are reasonable and appropriate, as well as accommodations and modifications are being followed. Communication will occur on at least a weekly basis to ensure each student has adequate access to special education services and to provide support to students and families. Case managers are encouraged to be creative and understanding during this time because we realize that this is a unique and overwhelming situation, however, we are going to make good faith efforts to support students on IEP’s and to meet their needs to the best of our ability.
How will lessons be delivered to accommodate a 504 plan?
BSD #7 will continue to follow each student’s 504 plan as applicable to ensure that students have equitable access to the general education curriculum and instruction through the distance/e-learning plan. 504 plan revisions can occur to accommodate virtual learning as needed.

Assessments
Due to COVID-19, all North Dakota state-wide assessments for accountability have been canceled for the 2019-20 school year. This includes NDSA, NDAA and ACT. For more information click on the State Assessment Information.
Additionally, all ACT makeup testing dates have been canceled by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) for spring 2020. ACT has provided North Dakota 11th graders who were not able to test on the initial test date of March 3, 2020, the opportunity to take the ACT with Writing on either the June or July national test date at no cost to them. NDDPI will provide vouchers for these tests. Students will need to go to ACT’s Website to register for the national June or July test date, using the voucher. On this registration site, students will be able to choose an available test center nearest to them. More information will be coming concerning the voucher request process.

This includes all of the outdoor recreation areas such as playgrounds and basketball courts. This is to ensure all children and families remain safe and healthy during this time of COVID-19. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee the equipment is germ-free nor can we monitor social distancing or the number of people gathering at playgrounds. We look forward to the time when the community can again enjoy our recreational facilities.

Extra-Curricular
The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) has provided direction for spring activity participation due to the closure of North Dakota schools by Governor Burgum. The direction provides limitations for coaches and directors and is effective indefinitely. For the full directive. Please visit the NDHSAA website. The NDHSAA will continue to monitor the situation and post notifications on their site as they become available.
Will there be a prom? What are the plans for graduation?
We are very proud of the achievements of our students and understand the importance of these milestone events. We are unable to provide a definite answer to these questions. The official response is that both of these events are postponed indefinitely. We are waiting for further guidance from the Governor’s Office regarding school closures and will provide updates on both the website and Facebook page as they become available.

Good Hygiene
Although the spread of COVID-19 appears to have started in China, it is important to remember that Coronavirus infection is not connected to any race, ethnicity, or nationality. We will not make assumptions about a student’s or staff member’s risk of illness based on any of these factors. Misinformation about coronavirus can create fear and hostility that harms people and makes it harder to keep everyone healthy.
